Day 87

Coronavirus: UK economy could be worst hit among leading nations, says OECD

Britain's economy is likely to slump by 11.5% in 2020, outstripping falls in other developed economics of Germany, France, Spain and Italy, it said.

If there were a second peak in the pandemic, the UK economy could contract by 14%.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development described the impact as "dire" everywhere.

In its latest assessment, the OECD found that the trade, tourism, and hospitality sectors, which make up large parts of the UK's service-based economy, have suffered under lockdown restrictions introduced by the government.

Thug

A journalist who had traced the history of the word, told the BBC in 2015 that "thug" was brought to Western society from India in 1897, later used by politicians and in the media, even reclaimed by hip-hop artists such as Tupac and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

It was used widely to describe black people involved the Baltimore riots in 2015, and the use of the word still hurts today

All Lives Matter

This is often used as a response to the phrase "black lives matter' - the feeling from some people that all lives should be included in the conversation around race.

JT believes people who say it may not understand what the "black lives matter" phrase means.

"Imagine your house is on fire and somebody comes up to you and says, 'Hey all houses matter.'

"Your response would be along the lines of, 'Yes but your house isn't on fire so if all houses matter and your house is fine, then why is it so much to ask you to care when my house is burning down?'"

JT believes we live in a society where - at present, "black lives aren't valued in the same way that white lives are."

Maybe the slogan is better phrased as "Black Lives Matter, Too".

Nancy Pelosi knelt, Joe Biden knelt and Trump called him a coward.

Day 48

02/05/2020 Saturday, Sunny After a week of rainy days, it's sunny again. Come across Chen Haowu on Youtube, who was one of the designers of China finantial system reform. Suprise to see he takes such a negative view on the reform result, i.e. the current status of China. An interesting view of his is that the finanace reform is a silent revolution. It changes China from public ownership to private ownership, from planned economy to market economy, from allocation by labour to allocation by capital. The formers are the three pillars of the classical socialism system. On the other hand, he seems to think China need adopt a faith/religon in order to counteract the vicious side (e.g. the unbounded pursuit of profit) of the market economy. And he's seriously considering Christianity. He also introduced the story of a Methodist Priest Samuel Pollard from Cornwall, England. In around 1900s, the priest converted a very large group of residents in Shimenkan, Guizhou province to Ch...
