Day 27

11/04/2020 Saturday, Sunny and Hot

There're heated debate on the book of Wuhan Diary by Fang Fang. Some people criticise her diary mainly show the sad and dark side of the lockdown period while ignoring the organised aid from outside as well as the fight of the local residents. Others argue that the book is a honest record of her experience, what she sees, what she hears and what she feels. It's not perfect but such voices should be tolerated.

I think as an individual, one should be allowed to think freely and speak freely. Even for an influential writer, he/she should not voice like the govenment spokesperson. Quite the opposite, we need diverse voices from authors, journalists, scholars and almost everyone. Honest voices about true feelings and insightful thoughts.

On the other hand, we should be alarmed about the biased speeches from politicians, such as the group of right-wing MPs in the Commons Foreign Affairs Committe. Such gangs of professionals usually have hidden agendas, good at fabricating "fake news" and inciting hatred against certain minorities. There's no right or wrong in their eyes, only interests and jungle rules.

Some say the majority of western people are friendly towards Chinese, the biased are only a few. One can find overwhelming number of negative reports on US/UK in the official Chinese media. I think a big difference is omitted here. I have not heard of any incidents that a westerner is attacked in the street in China, while hate crimes against Chinese in US/UK are reported from time to time. When politicians express hostile views against China, I feel unsafe walking outside the house. When the US people chose "a racist, a conn man and a cheater" as their president, they have expressed their views clearly.

Day 48

02/05/2020 Saturday, Sunny After a week of rainy days, it's sunny again. Come across Chen Haowu on Youtube, who was one of the designers of China finantial system reform. Suprise to see he takes such a negative view on the reform result, i.e. the current status of China. An interesting view of his is that the finanace reform is a silent revolution. It changes China from public ownership to private ownership, from planned economy to market economy, from allocation by labour to allocation by capital. The formers are the three pillars of the classical socialism system. On the other hand, he seems to think China need adopt a faith/religon in order to counteract the vicious side (e.g. the unbounded pursuit of profit) of the market economy. And he's seriously considering Christianity. He also introduced the story of a Methodist Priest Samuel Pollard from Cornwall, England. In around 1900s, the priest converted a very large group of residents in Shimenkan, Guizhou province to Ch...
